Typography
Our fonts help reinforce our identity, promote readability. Fonts used in District marketing and communication print and web-based materials should only contain our approved brand fonts.
Using Typography
Cursive and script fonts are difficult for many to read and don’t meet the needs of our customers' needs equitability.
Avoid adding text on top of graphics. Screen readers can’t read words embedded on images. Our website translation function is incapable of translating words on a graphic.
Consistency and readability are essential to good design, and too many font changes can distract and confuse the reader. Limit font families to just one or two for flyers, brochures, programs, ads, and other short documents.
Print based and official logo font
Gill Sans is the preferred font for Round Rock ISD. It should be used for all headline and body text on printed material. It is the only font to be associated with the Round Rock ISD logo. No substitutions are allowed.
If you do not have access to Gill Sans, please contact our Graphics Coordinator.

Web based primary font
Since Gill Sans is not a web-based font, Lato may be substituted on websites, emails and other digital communications for headline and body text when Gill Sans is not available.
Do not use Lato as a substitute for Gill Sans on any part of the District’s logo.

Secondary fonts. Use to compliment primary font, not to replace.

Print based secondary font
Kalam is the preferred secondary font for Round Rock ISD for print and social media communication. It can be used to compliment Gill Sans on printed material as a subtitle. Do not use Kalam for body copy or paragraphs. Kalam is not to be used on web or email based communications due to screen size legibility, and possible language translation and Section 508 ADA readability issues. Do not substitute another “brush” font for Kalam.
Kalam is available in the the Google environment. Go to the font pull down menu under the “more fonts” option. Or, download Kalam from the Google font library.

Web, email based secondary font
Bitter is the preferred secondary font for Round Rock ISD for electronic based communications such as webpages and email. It should be used to compliment Lato, not replace. It can be applied for alternate headings and subtitles and for limited body copy.
Bitter is available in the Google font library and within the District’s WordPress theme.
Tips
- Only use Gill Sans or Lato when referring to Round Rock ISD on digital or printed material. If this is not practical or convenient, consider using the District's logo (circle and logotype) to graphically convey our name.
- Do not generically refer to Round Rock ISD by any acronym. We are Round Rock ISD. Spell it out.
- Never place periods between the ISD letters.
- Never refer to the District as "The Round Rock ISD."
- Secondary fonts are to be used to compliment Gill Sans or Lato. They should not be used as stand alone fonts or as replacement fonts.
- Never underline text unless the underline conveys an active link. Refrain from this practice altogether on websites and for any attached digital document (pdf, docs, Google Docs, etc.)
- Refrain from italicizing text unless you are citing a source. Italicized text is difficult to read and results in a poor user experience.
